Canopy fabric
When choosing an umbrella, you need to consider the fabric used as it affects durability, colorfastness (how soon it will fade), the UV protection it offers, price, looks, care, maintenance other aspects.
Sunbrella is considered the industry leader that is closely rivaled with olefin. However, other fabrics like polyester (with top brands like Pacifica, O’Bravia, Spuncrylic fabric), Coolaroo fabric, etc., are also acceptable.
Tempera patio umbrellas are made with either olefin (10 ft.) or polyester (9 feet brands), and their polyester is solution dyed (increases colorfastness).
While both are strong fabrics, chemical resistant, recyclable, and so on, olefin is superior to polyester when it comes to colorfastness but not necessarily expensive like Sunbrella.
Finally, you have an option of choosing from the several colors that each size comes in, should you want to complement it with another outdoor décor.
Frame
Umbrellas may be made from steel, wooden, aluminum, fiberglass, or wood frame materials, or a combination of any of these materials. Each of these materials has its pros and cons.
Tempera uses an aluminum pole that is lightweight, corrosion and rust resistant, performs well in low temperature (compared to steel), and is affordable.
However, aluminum tends to dent, scratch, or get dings quickly. Similarly, in case of strong winds, it may deform, warp, or bend easily.
For ribs, Tempera patio umbrellas have steel ribs to provide the extra strength required. It is also harder, cheaper, and won’t bend or warp easily. Unfortunately, steel is heavier and vulnerable to corrosion and rusting.
Finally, to improve durability, minimize corrosion, chipping, rusting, or peeling, both the pole and ribs are powder-coated with a black matte finish.
Features
These umbrellas have more or less standard features, i.e., you will open or close them with a crank mechanism, while for tilting, you have the auto-tilt that uses the crank mechanism and or the push-button tilt feature.
Additionally, they come with a tied down strap, a single air vent for increased stability (allows air to escape if it is windy), and permits air circulation to help keep the area under the canopy low.
Compared to other brands, it doesn’t score well on features since it doesn’t come with inbuilt features like speakers, solar-powered lights, etc.
Durability
Both the 9 feet and 10 feet umbrellas are durable. However, the 10 feet that have an olefin canopy will last longer before it fades. It has been tested for at least 800 hours of colorfastness. However, there are complaints that olefin isn’t 100% water-resistant.
Besides the durable material, proper care includes closing your umbrella when not in use or storing it during winter, having a good umbrella cover, closing it during storms or strong wind gusts, which will further increase its lifespan.
Pricing
Tempera patio umbrellas are quite affordable, with the 9 feet going for less than $50 while the 10 feet is less than $110. Compared to many brands of a similar caliber, they compete for favorability in terms of prices.
Usage
While it is ideal for commercial and residential places such as gardens, patios, balconies, decks, poolside, and so on, we don’t recommend it for high traffic areas. Why? Because the crank auto-tilt and push-button tilt are likely to be damaged if used too often.
Our verdict
Tempera patio umbrellas are durable, well-made, and affordable umbrellas worth every penny you will spend on them. The 9 feet will be ideal for 42-54-inch tables with 4-6 chairs, while the 10 feet is suitable for people with larger 4-6 chairs as it can be used with 54-66-inch tables.
Since they don’t have any stands, we recommend buying a 90-100 lb for a free-standing arrangement and half the weight when used through a table.
